Future-Proof Your Career: Key Insights from My Alleyn's School Workshop
Future-Proof Your Career: Key Insights from My Alleyn's School Workshop
We often tell young people to 'stick to what they’re good at,' but what if that’s actually limiting their potential?
It might sound helpful at first, but how do you even know what you’re good at… if you never give things a go?
That’s exactly what I explored with 100 students at Alleyn's School in London during my Future-Proof Your Skills workshop. In an ever changing world, the best career advice I could give was:
Give things a go and don’t let anyone put you in a box.

Talent vs Passion
The job market is shifting fast. AI, automation, and emerging technologies are redefining not only how we work, but what work even looks like. Here’s what we know:
Tech is changing the job market
The future of work depends on how we prepare the next generation
Trying things out builds experience – and experience builds confidence
By 2030, we're expected to see 20 million new jobs emerge – many of which don’t exist yet. That’s why sticking only to what you’re 'already good at' might hold you back.
Instead, we need to focus on the intersection of:
Your talents
Your passions (aka what makes you tick)
Emerging trends shaping the future of work
This happy point is the new formula for building meaningful, future-proof careers.

Finding Your Fit
In my workshop session, I encouraged students to explore career paths through action, not just theory.
So, if you’re wondering what you’re 'good at, or where to even begin, start with these steps:
Identify your skills – What do you enjoy doing? What comes naturally?
Find a problem to solve – Look for real-world issues you’d like to improve
Align it with passion and purpose – What matters to you?
Because figuring it out isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about being brave enough to ask the right questions.
Takeaway
The workshop helped students break free from the idea that they have to have it 'all figured out'. Instead, we encouraged them to:
Explore new subjects and interests
Reflect on what energises them
Embrace the uncertainty as a learning opportunity
And the worst-case scenario? You find out what you don’t want to do, and that’s progress too.
Key Piece of Advice
'Sticking to what you’re good at' might sound safe at first, but it can be quite limiting. Instead, experiment, reflect, and align your skills with purpose and possibility.
Because future-proofing isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being curious enough to ask better questions.
So What?
Because when we give young people permission to explore without pressure, we prepare them to be more adaptable, curious, and creative, which is exactly what the future of work demands.
I’m proud to deliver workshop sessions like this with schools across the UK, where we’re not just talking about career planning, we’re shaping confidence and capability from day one.
