The 3-2-1 Networking Tip That Changed How I Connect

The 3-2-1 Networking Tip That Changed How I Connect

Networking can often feel overwhelming, especially when you’re at an event full of unfamiliar faces. We’ve all been there – trying to figure out who to approach, what to say, and how to make it feel genuine.

Over the years, I’ve learned that effective networking isn’t about speaking to everyone. Instead, it’s about making a few meaningful connections. That’s when I introduced the 3-2-1 Networking Rule into my approach, a strategy I explore in more depth in my book, Unprepared to Entrepreneur.

It’s a simple strategy that’s helped me build lasting relationships without feeling overwhelmed. Rather than trying to be everywhere at once, I focus on quality interactions. This shift has really changed the way I network.

The 3-2-1 rule is all about focusing on three key steps: talking to three people, connecting with two, and following up with one. Here's how it works:

Talk to 3 People

When you attend an event or networking session, aim to start a conversation with at least three people. These interactions don’t have to be long or overly formal. The key is to get out there, introduce yourself, share your background, and show genuine interest in what they do. Networking is about quality, not just quantity. You’re seeking connections with people who align with your professional goals or interests.

Top Tip:

Don't be afraid to approach people outside of your usual circle. Sometimes, the most unexpected conversations lead to the best opportunities, and that’s where everything starts.

Connect with 2 People

Once you've had a conversation with someone, make sure to follow up with at least two people you felt a genuine connection with. Networking doesn’t end after the first chat – it’s about building lasting relationships. After your initial conversation, take the time to reach out and continue the dialogue. You can:

  • Send a personalised LinkedIn message within 24 hours. A quick note to remind them of who you are, what you enjoyed about your conversation, and why you want to stay in touch goes a long way.

  • Propose an action – whether that’s scheduling another coffee, collaborating on something, or simply sharing something useful with them. Taking that extra step shows that you’re serious about connecting.

Top Tip:

Consistency is key. Following up shows you value the connection and are serious about building a long-term relationship.

Follow-Up with 1 Person

Now, the final step is what really makes the networking effort worthwhile. After each event, take the time to follow up with one person you connected with the most. This doesn’t just mean sending a message – focus on what you learned from the conversation. Is there a piece of advice or insight that you can apply in your work? Make that your actionable takeaway.

Top Tip:

Each conversation should provide you with something valuable. By focusing on one key takeaway, you ensure your networking is more than just a casual chat, but a chance to grow and improve.

Takeaway

The 3-2-1 Networking Rule has changed the way I approach building connections. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the idea of networking, I’ve learned to focus on a few meaningful interactions that lead to strong relationships and real outcomes.

Networking isn’t about meeting everyone in the room – it’s about meeting the right kind of people, forming lasting connections, and gaining insights that will help you flourish.

Key Piece of Advice

The true power of networking doesn’t lie in the number of people you meet, but in the depth of your connection with them.

By embracing the 3-2-1 rule, you can make your networking efforts more intentional and impactful.

So What?

Networking isn’t about making as many connections as possible; it’s about creating meaningful ones. If you follow the 3-2-1 rule, you’ll network smarter, not harder. It’s all about focusing on quality over quantity and making each interaction count.
