How Intentional Networking Changed My Career (And How It Can for You Too!)

How Intentional Networking Changed My Career (And How It Can for You Too!)

Five years ago, after being made redundant, I found myself with no backup plan, no clear direction, but just one overwhelming question: what now?

I didn’t have a mentor or a recruitment team advocating for me. What I did have was a decision to make: either stay stuck or start building again, differently.

So I focused on the one thing I could control: connection. That’s when I discovered the power of intentional networking – not the surface-level kind with business cards and elevator pitches, but something deeper: building community, being visible with value, and showing up consistently. That mindset shift has shaped my entire career.

It’s this approach that has led to speaking at global conferences like Unistra Academy and London Tech Week, growing the LMF NETWORK (Like Minded Females) to support over 20,000 women and professionals across 24 countries, and being recognised as a LinkedIn Top Voice. It wasn’t luck, but about shifting mindsets, embracing consistency, owning my value, and investing in relationships that matter.

Here’s how intentional networking changed my life – and how it can change yours, too.

1. Shift your perspective.

Networking isn’t about selling yourself. It’s about building trust and sharing your story. People want to connect with people—authentic, relatable, value-driven professionals.

According to Forbes, at least 80% of all jobs, are filled through a professional network connection. Yet, many professionals spend more time perfecting their CV than building relationships that open doors.

Tip: Focus on purpose over performance. Ask yourself, “What do I care about, and who else cares about this too?”

2. Practice, practice, practice!

Like public speaking or writing, networking improves with consistent practice. Start small: one LinkedIn message, one coffee chat, one in-person hello at an event. You’ll get better, and braver, each time.

For example, I started by messaging people I admired, asking one thoughtful question, and following up. Some of those early conversations turned into opportunities and long-term friendships.

3. Perform to the best of your ability.

It’s not about pretending. It’s about preparing. When you show up with clarity and confidence, you invite others to believe in your value too. Its best to know your strengths and understand the value you bring, because preparation builds presence.

Tip: Create a one-liner that explains what you do, who you help, and how. Keep it simple and speak it with confidence.

4. Be kind with people.

The best relationships are built on kindness, not convenience. Be curious, be generous and be the kind of person you’d want to collaborate with. Offer help before asking for it. And remember: those who see your value won’t need convincing.

Kindness is your superpower, especially in an industry that often rewards transactional relationships.

5. Play and expand outside your bubble.

Yes, play. Some of the most meaningful opportunities in my career didn’t come from a direct connection in tech or business. They came from saying yes to new spaces, attending fun events, and meeting people outside my industry.

Exploring outside your immediate industry creates opportunities for interdisciplinary thinking, creative problem-solving, and more authentic connections.

Takeaway

Networking doesn’t require a perfect pitch or your most formal attire. It requires you and your voice, your story, your willingness to show up and add value. Whether you're job searching, building a brand, or growing your impact, the right relationships can fast-track your journey.

'Enjoy your blueprint, grow your network, try new things, have fun, and keep going.'

Key Piece of Advice

If your big goal feels too far off, break it into smaller missions. Let your network help shape the journey. But don’t wait to be invited, just reach out, speak up, and lead with intention.

So What?

Your network is your net worth, but only if you maintain it with purpose.

In a digital-first world, visibility, vulnerability, and value go hand-in-hand. If you’re feeling stuck, start with one message, one connection, one conversation. You never know where it might lead.

And the results? They’ll speak for themselves.
